Artist Profile – Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol is a Northern Irish–Scottish alternative rock band, originally formed in 1994 in Dundee, Scotland. Their founding members included Gary Lightbody (vocals, guitar), Mark McClelland (bass, keyboards) and Michael Morrison (drums). Since then, the lineup has evolved to include Core members Lightbody, Nathan Connolly (guitar, backing vocals) and Johnny McDaid (piano, guitar, keyboards, backing vocals).

Early in their career the band performed under names like “Shrug” and “Polarbear” before settling on Snow Patrol in 1997. Their first two albums, Songs for Polarbears (1998) and When It’s All Over We Still Have to Clear Up (2001) were released via independent label Jeepster Records and received critical acclaim but limited commercial success.

The band’s major breakthrough came with their third album, Final Straw (2003) — featuring the powerful single “Run” — and their follow-up Eyes Open (2006), which includes the track “Chasing Cars”. “Chasing Cars” in particular became a global anthem and was noted as the most-played song of the 21st century on UK radio.

Their subsequent albums include A Hundred Million Suns (2008), Fallen Empires (2011) and Wildness (2018). Most recently they released The Forest Is the Path in September 2024 — marking a new chapter for the band after changes in membership.

Snow Patrol’s live performances are characterised by sweeping melodies, emotionally charged lyrics and big-arena soundscapes that still retain an intimate connection. Over the years, the band has earned widespread recognition through award nominations and wins — including multiple nominations at the Brit Awards, a Grammy nomination and several BMI, Ivor Novello and Meteor Music Awards.

Key Trivia & Milestones

  • The single “Chasing Cars” was voted “Song of the Decade” by Channel 4 and declared the most-played song of the decade in the UK.
  • In June 2010 the band received a Heritage Award from PRS for Music with a plaque erected on the pub in Belfast where they played their first gig.
  • When recording The Forest Is the Path, founding member Gary Lightbody stated that with the departure of drummer Jonny Quinn and bassist Paul Wilson in 2023, the band chose to move forward as a trio to face a “new chapter”.
  • The band’s origin traces back to Lightbody and McClelland’s student days at the University of Dundee, with the initial formation under the name “Shrug”.
  • Despite global success, Snow Patrol’s earliest years included performances at very small venues—one anecdote records them playing to just 18 people at a strip-club-style venue, a low point before rising to stadiums.

With their landmark concert approaching at St Anne’s Park on 31 May 2026, Snow Patrol are set to deliver the kind of live set that blends their anthem-rich past with fresh energy. Expect fan favourites, deeper cuts and that unmistakable atmosphere where multitude and intimacy meet — a moment to celebrate a band that continues to evolve while staying true to what made them beloved in the first place.
