About My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine, often abbreviated as MBV, are one of the most influential and enigmatic bands in alternative rock history. Formed in Dublin in 1983, the band later relocated to London and began pioneering what would come to be known as the “shoegaze” genre — a lush, atmospheric blend of swirling guitars, distorted textures, and dreamy vocals. Their music is defined by sensory overload, feedback manipulation, and emotional detachment that somehow remains profoundly moving.

Led by visionary guitarist and producer Kevin Shields, the band released several early EPs in the mid-1980s, but it was their 1988 album Isn’t Anything that first hinted at their revolutionary potential. This was followed by the 1991 landmark Loveless, widely considered one of the greatest and most sonically adventurous albums of all time. Featuring tracks like “Only Shallow”, “To Here Knows When”, and “Sometimes”, Loveless transformed guitar-based music and cemented MBV’s legacy as sonic innovators.

Famously, Loveless took over two years and numerous studios to complete, almost bankrupting their label Creation Records in the process. The album’s hypnotic guitar work was achieved through Shields’ unique use of tremolo, pitch bending, and extensive layering — creating an immersive sound that seemed to hover between chaos and beauty. Its influence can be traced across decades, inspiring artists in rock, ambient, electronic, and even hip-hop circles.

After Loveless, the band entered a long period of silence, with members pursuing solo projects and rumours swirling about unfinished albums. They resurfaced with the long-awaited m b v in 2013 — released independently, with no prior announcement. The album was met with critical acclaim, praised for both preserving their signature sound and evolving it into something warmer, more introspective.

Despite their limited touring, MBV’s live shows are legendary for their volume and intensity. Known for their extended noise sections — including the infamous “holocaust” section in “You Made Me Realise” — the band doesn’t just perform music, they envelop the audience in it. Fans wear earplugs not as a precaution, but as survival gear. A My Bloody Valentine concert is less about songs and more about sound as physical force.

Their 2025 performance at 3Arena marks one of the band’s few headline shows in Ireland in recent years, and is a monumental return to the city where it all began. With a cult following that spans generations, this event will attract long-time devotees and new fans alike — all eager to be immersed in the noise and nuance that only My Bloody Valentine can deliver.

Trivia You Might Not Know:

  • The band’s name was inspired by a Canadian horror film — not the holiday!
  • Kevin Shields has said he prefers analog recording because digital “feels too clean”
  • They were briefly signed to Island Records in the late 1990s but never released an album under the label
  • The band was inducted into the Pitchfork Hall of Fame for Loveless
  • Despite their experimentalism, their gear setup is surprisingly minimal — focusing more on technique than equipment
